Self Portrait
One project that I found challenging yet successful was my self portrait drawing. I feel I went out of the box and I was very creative with it and I love that it has a story behind it. Although my intentions were not for it to be a picture of myself it had to be to meet the requirements for the project. I started off brainstorming and getting some inspiration from making a board on Pinterest special for this project. I also wanted this project to have a story behind it so I took some inspiration from what was happening in my life at the moment and tried to incorporate it into the drawing. I was very motivated to show the balance between good and bad in life through the picture, so I had the girl crying flowers. I took some pictures of myself to try and make it look like myself and I sketched all three pictures I had with a different theme. Once I sketched my final one I knew it was my favorite, I liked how I made the picture flow and I liked the different angle, rather than looking at someone straight on. I hadn't used very much charcoal before this and I love the way charcoal looks it has very nice coloration and I knew it would be beneficial. I also loved the value range you can get from using charcoal. Halfway through this project I went to add some highlight to the chin and picked up black instead of white and thought I messed up the whole thing, until I realized i could make it into a bruise. It started off as just one bruise on her face but I added more to balance it out. This was a very good mistake, however, because it makes for a great message behind what this picture is trying to express. This girl is crying, looking beaten and bruised, but she has a slight grin and look of confidence in her and the tears turn into flowers. It's showing the emotional damage you can do to someone and it can affect their everyday life. However it makes you so much stronger and that's what the flowers represent. It's sad that it takes something terrible to bring out the strength in someone but that's how it is and everyone is strong in their own way.
